Sofia the First

7. List your NoTPs from each fandom you’ve been in.

8. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?

In 2014, my Nana passed away. I was devastated and didn’t really know how to cope with losing her. I tried to find things to cheer me up (since it was a few months that I’d attempted to deal with her death), and I stumbled upon Sofia the First. I’d heard about it the previous year or so, and I’d wanted to watch it since I’d heard about the possible Latina heritage Sofia had (which turned out to be a falsity, but it’s fine); as a Spanish teacher, I’m always looking for new examples for my students. The FIRST video I ever watched on the show was Amber’s song “Bigger is Better.” I was instantly hooked. I watched that video at least five times in one sitting! LOVED her voice and the characters already. The first episode I ever watched was “Two Princesses and a Baby,” in which I was introduced to Cedric (my favorite character). I was a little confused about how everything fit into the timeline (and I was convinced Cedric was actually a bad guy, lol), so I decided to start from the beginning and work my way up. I’ve been watching the show consistently ever since. Five and a half years going strong!

9. What are the best things about your current fandom?

Many of the authors and artists who create content for the fandom are wonderful. Craig is really interactive on Twitter, which is amazing.

10.  Is there a fandom you read fics from but don’t write in?

Oh, sure, plenty! I’ve told others before that I’m mainly a writer who rarely has time to read, but every now and then I’ll take some time to do just that. Since I solely write for Sofia the First now (and sometimes crossovers with Elena of Avalor), I don’t write for any of my older fandoms. I still enjoy reading Hey Arnold! stories and sometimes even Kim Possible. I tend to have a small collective area of reading material, I suppose.

Ship Questions for your Current Fandom

11. Who is your current OTP?

Mateo/Elena (You cannot tell me that there will be no couples on this show. I’m watching these two like a hawk. They literally touch each other’s hands/arms/shoulders for no reason. Mm-hmm. Lol)

12. Who is your current OT3?

Lol, I had to look this up! Um, don’t have one of those.

13. Any NoTPs?

Hugo/Sofia. Gabe/Elena. Mateo/Naomi. Estéban/Shuriki (stop torturing that poor man)

14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?

Cedric/Sofia all the way! 😊

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?

It sounds silly, but in Sofia the First, I can’t help but really like Gnarlie and Grotta together, whether as friends or anything other than that.

16. Are there any popular ships in your fandom which you dislike?

Hugo/Sofia. I’m sorry. I just don’t care for Hugo, and I don’t quite understand the fascination with pairing him with Sofia. Okay, “Lord of the Rink” happened. Fine. But I’m just not on the Hugo/Sofia train. No offense to those who are. You ship whomever you wish.

17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?

Arnold/Helga, and after The Jungle Movie, absolutely! 😊

18. What ship have you written the most about?

I usually don’t write romantic ships. I’ve said it before and will say it again: I’m horrendous at romance. However, Amber/Desmond has been my most consistent one...for now. ;)

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?

Nah. If I don’t like the ship, I don’t like the ship. End of story.

20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?

Not really.

Author Questions

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?

Oh, gosh… On the FF site, it was this awful Sailor Moon story whereby I utilized the characters to represent my friends and myself and our daily lives as high school students. It’s SO cringe-worthy now and I hate being reminded of it. Lol.

22. Is there anything you regret writing?

Oh, sure. That’s why I deleted them. Lol.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

I truly love “In a Heartbeat.” It was so personal for me, because I had to tap into a lot of old, raw emotions to put myself into Cedric’s shoes for that story. I found myself sobbing by the time I was done, so I literally put my tears and heart into that story, so I hope it comes across that way.

24. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit?

You know what? I don’t really think of things that way. I’ve got this thing about leaving the past the way it is, because that was a particular time frame when something occurred and should be left as it is.

25. What’s your most popular fanfic?

Just off the top of my head, I’d say either “Mood Swings” or “Timey Wimey.” Hahaha. “Timey Wimey” has 59 reviews.

As of 2020, my most popular fanfic is "Adventures in Magic." It has 212 reviews.

26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?

Different ways: play on words, based on the cover photos, based on the summary, based on a song title…

27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?

Summaries, definitely. Like, how am I going to condense a 4,000-word story into a mere few sentences? lol

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

It’s happened a few times already! MarionetteJ2X has drawn plenty of fanart for my stories (“Dream Team,” “Piercing Blue” [her idea, actually], and several others. CedricCentric also created a fanart for my story “Fish and Butterflies.” An arist named missmysticshipstfeo created the cover for "Baby mine," which is the story where Amber had Alamea (her daughter). I’m sure I’ve missed some, but I always appreciate those who create art based on my stories. I don’t think people realize what it means for a writer to get such wonderful art like that.

29. Do you have a beta reader? Why/Why not?

I don’t. I’ve been writing for a very long time, and I prefer to read over my own work. I’m extremely picky about what will and will not be posted. Since I teach English, I understand the conventions of English grammar and have pretty good command of the language. Sure, I make mistakes sometimes, but overall I think I handle everything pretty well.

30. What inspires you to write?

Music, pictures, dreams, scenes from shows, real life… You name it!

31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

The best thing anyone can tell me is that I’m being true to the characters when I write. One thing I loathe to happen in any story is for a character to be OOC. It’s like a slap in the face to the original creator, so I tend to absorb what I see on screen and write until I get the characters right. I’ve also gotten compliments on my grammar (:D), my humor, my emotional connection with the characters and audience, and several other things. I love feedback, and I always welcome constructional feedback. It makes me a better writer.

32. Do you listen to music when you write or does music inspire you? If so, which band or genre of music does it for you?

Oh, I’m always listening to something when I write. Sometimes it’s ambient sounds of rain/thunder; sometimes it’s The Greatest Showman soundtrack. Broadway music tends to be a go-to for me when I want to be inspired to write. Anything uplifting and bouncy usually does it. If I need something for the slower elements of the story, Enya or piano music may make a stop by. Sometimes music (such as the song “All that Matters” from Finding Neverland) inspires the actual story!

33. Do you write oneshots, multi-chapter fics or huuuuuge epics?

I used to write mostly one-shots, but I’ve lately been writing multichapter stories. I doubt I'll ever write an "epic," but I do have secret plans for something after I finish my five seasons of stories.

34. What’s the word count on your longest fic?

“Adventures in Magic” at 77,440 words.

35. Do you write drabbles? If so, what do you normally write them about?

No.

36. What’s your favourite genre to write?

I really enjoy writing for friendship, family, and humor; lately, I've also quite enjoyed mystery (which is my favorite genre to read).

37. First person or third person - what do you write in and why?

I would say that 99% of the time I write in third person, because I’m most comfortable with it and I like writing from that perspective.

38. Do you use established canon characters or do you create OCs?

I write with the established characters. I’ve created several OCs over the years who’ve driven the plotlines forward and contributed to the story. My favorite OCs have been very prominent in my story lines. However, I mostly write with the canon characters.

39. What is your greatest strength as a writer?

I think I’m pretty good at finding the humor in most things, and I’m also pretty good at portraying the established levels (or suggested levels) of friendship and bonds between characters. I also think I've gotten the knack of digging deeper into a character's emotions and portraying them realistically but also in accordance with the original canon.

40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?

Romance. Enough said.

Fanfiction Questions

41. List and link to 5 fanfics you are currently reading:

I’m not currently reading any fanfics.

42. List and link to 5 fanfiction authors who are amazing:

Too many to name. Just check out my favorite author list, and you should get a pretty good idea. 😉

43. Is there anyone in your fandom who really inspires you?

Definitely the reviewers of my stories and the authors with whom I've grown close. 😊

44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?

Out of the ones I previously mentioned, I’d love to see more Rhonda/Harold stories. SO many people pair her with Curly and him with Patty, and I’m over here like… :(. lol

45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?

Gosh, that’s hard… I always go back to “Learning to be Helga.” :D So probably that.

46. If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?

Probably the “Mood Swings” series, because it was so fun and funny to write and they can get an idea of my personality through the story, and the characters from STF are portrayed in a more elevated/hilarious manner. I also enjoy reading the reviews on that one. Potassium, anyone? 😉

47. Archive Of Our Own, Fanfiction.net or Tumblr - where do you prefer to post and why?

Fanfiction.net, because I’ve been there since 2002 and hate change. Lol. Plus all my friends/readers/reviewers are there.

48. Do you leave reviews when you read fanfiction? Why/Why not?

Sometimes. I'm more likely to leave reviews for the people I’m friends with, but I’m often uncomfortable penning out a review for those whose stories I don’t read often. Unless I’m truly moved or motivated by a story, I tend to just favorite the story instead.

49. Do you care if people comment/reblog your writing? Why/why not?

Go for it! I love getting feedback, and if they feel inclined to share my writing, it’s an honor to me.

50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?

I’ve been writing since I was little, and I stumbled upon FF.net when I was in middle school. I was looking for some stories about Sailor Moon or Hey Arnold! Lol! So, I found the site and finally registered in 2002 (high school). As of this past January, I’ve been on the site for 16 years. Wow. Haha.

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!

Gush: I love the feedback and the interaction with the writers and the readers.

Rant: I hate the anonymous (and often negatively-repetitive) feedback that flamers leave; it’s the reason why I put guest reviews on moderate. I also dislike when people trash someone else for shipping a couple they don't like. What's the point? Let people have their opinions. You have *yours* after all... I also detest when people steal OCs or content that I've worked hard to create myself. My universe is not up for grabs. You need to be gracious enough to ASK me first if you can borrow my OCs and ideas. Considering the issues recently, though, I am far less inclined to say yes. I don't steal others' ideas, and I should be able to expect the same courtesy bestowed upon me. One final thing I hate? When authors trash other authors and their work on social media platforms of all kinds and don't have the consideration to bring their concerns to that particular author. Shading others doesn't make THEM look bad; it makes YOU look bad. So do as the old adage says: "Keep your comments to yourself, and act your age and not your shoe size." Thanks.
